Pretending

Keep pretending
To be praying
For the lost souls
And their failed goals
When there is nothing more
You would do —

Here we are again
This time it’s Liverpool
It’s a car again
And an older man driving
Into people celebrating
While the lone man
Didn’t belong to anyone
Society is fast
In calling him a murderer
There is already pretending
To know where he’s coming from
His social background
As well as his culture
His identity
His religion
He’s already the centre of attention
When he shouldn’t be
There are hurt people
Actually an entire city
Over one million people
Celebrating at one second
Running for their lives at the next
Soon enough
There are thoughts and prayers
Written down on social media
Under a post
That generates attention
Again we jump to conclusions
Too soon
Too fast
And this incident again won’t last
Already forgotten tomorrow
At least outside of Liverpool
And this fool with his car
Will have all the attention
That he missed all his life before
While the victims are remembered
In phrases —

Keep pretending
To know about the victims’ feelings
Their worst dealings
Aren’t your concern
You might feel better
But they don’t.
